Woody relates, "Major Carroll Bernard is a Louisiana 'Cajun'; he and I were on a mission when enemy ack-ack hit him. I was maybe 100 yards from his plane. All of a sudden there began the most weird outburst of garbled howling I ever heard...couldn't understand one word. Was I on another planet? No, not at all. It was Carroll. Frightened to death for the moment, he reverted to his boyhood New Iberia 'Cajun' tongue. On our return flight I 'rode herd' on him, soaking up his wild, non-stop, jabber-wacky chatter. His mutilated F9F jet was tough  to control. Nevertheless, Major Bernard, like Ted Williams, was takusan lucky to get back to our friendly territory. Somewhat calmed down after de-briefing, he claimed he was only trying to explain to me that he took some enemy fire and was 'just a little worried'. Well, I guess so! By the way, Carroll sustained stomach and facial wounds during this mission."
